Coogam CVC game

The Coogam CVC game comes with a bag to contain all the pieces, blue consonant tiles, vowel boards, and picture/word cards. This is a great buy to use with your child. Differentiating short vowel sounds are tricky, and this game allows them to practice those sounds. The only caution I have, is that it should be played with the adult present to avoid the child just turning over the picture to see the letters.

The popcorn games from Learning Resources are excellent choices. For the blends game, I start by pulling out any digraphs. Children will struggle to produce words that start with a consonant blend. We can support that by teaching them to pick a short vowel to follow it. For word families, I take out the vowel-r popcorns as that is too challenging for beginners. The game is engaging and keeps them involved.

Hands down, one of my best buys. I use these for all levels of students. I have not met a child yet that did not engage with these blocks. They are incredibly versatile and useful. For my beginners, I only use the blue consonants and the red vowels. I also pull out all the ‘x’ ‘y’ and ‘q’s as those have special rules. We start with CVC blue-red-blue combinations and work our way up. This is also great for creating and reading nonsense words. Highly recommend. My bin here is a mix of Hand2Mind reading rods and left over Learning Resource reading rods.

These triangular shaped mechanical pencils are a favorite of ours. They are very helpful for grip and the lead is thick, decreasing breakage. Dyslexic students very frequently press very hard with their pencil, often times breaking it. The only downside to these pencils is that the erasers are TERRIBLE! Make sure you have another eraser available.
