This website is dedicated to the parents of children with dyslexia or other learning disabilities. I hope to raise awareness and provide answers in a clear and meaningful way.

What is dyslexia anyway?

It is a specific learning disability.

Dyslexia is a neurobiological disability that affects 1 in 5 people. Through the power of fMRIs, scientists have been able to pinpoint how dyslexic brains differ from “normal” brains. At its core, it is characterized by a deficit in the phonological processing of language. This, in turn, leads to many more complications in reading and writing.

It is NOT….

Dyslexia is not a visual processing disorder. It is not caused by acquisition of a second language or by low intelligence. It is not something that can be “cured.” It

is not simply “laziness” or lack of effort. It is not something that one can “grow out of.”

How Do I Know When To Worry?

Be Knowledgeable of the Dyslexia “Red Flags”

There are characteristics, or signs, to watch out for at different stages in a child’s development. As you become more familiar with these signs, you might start to see some of them in yourself or a family member. Dyslexia was not readily diagnosed years ago, and there are many adults walking around not even realizing that they too have dyslexia.

Poor Academic Success

When your child has struggles in school, it might be a cause for concern. If the difficulties are unexpected in relation to their intelligence, then more analysis needs to be made. As children get older, they can (and often do) develop behavior concerns and exhibit high anxiety. These too, should not be ignored.
